The Dojo - The top of the Dojo will always be designated the KAMIZA or Shrine. This will have a picture of 0'Sensei. (Not all Dojo’s follow this practice but most dojo always line up in one direction to start and stop a class. This direction can be classed as the Kamiza)

The Line-up - The Line-up is always organized so that the Highest Grade is on SENSEI Left when he/she looks toward the Line-up . It is the senior grades responsibility to ensure the correctness of the Line-up. The Line-up always takes place at the beginning and the end of the class. Sleeves should be rolled down and Gi’s should be tidied and belts tied correctly. Safety should also be checked by the senior grades no rings, earrings, brace1ets etc.

Entering the Dojo ( before class) - On entering the Dojo the student should make a standing bow towards the KAMIZA. Quickly change leaving shoes and bags neatly at the far end of the dojo and wait quietly for the line-up to be called.

Entering during class - Enter the Dojo as above, quickly change, then stand at the edge of the training area and bow to the instructor. Wait until the instructor invites you into the class.

During Class - Bow before and after a demonstration with the instructor. Bow to your partner before and after practice. A junior grade should be TORI first. A senior grade should be UKE first. Always finish a technique even if you begin a technique incorrectly.

If you need to leave the training area, bow to your instructor and ask for permission to leave. On returning to the training area, bow and wait at the side of the training area until you are invited back into the class.

When moving around the training area during a class, never walk between an instructor and their students.

End of c1ass Sensei will call for students to line-up. SENSEI will bow to the Kamiza, he will then turn and bow to the class. Students will then be asked to bow to each other.

Bokken (Sword), Bo (Stick) & Tanto (Knife) Instruction During instruction the weapon is laid on the left if kneeling. When standing, stay on posture or return the weapon to hip. The weapon can be stored in the belt of the student Gi or held at their side.
